Laurence M. Westreich, MD

Laurence M. Westreich, M.D. is a psychiatrist who specializes in the treatment of patients diagnosed with Substance Use Disorders (SUDs), and those dually diagnosed with SUDs and mental disorders. He graduated from the University of Minnesota School of Medicine, completed a residency in Psychiatry at New York’s Beth Israel Medical Center, and took a two-year fellowship in Addiction Psychiatry at New York University/Bellevue Hospital. He is board –certified in General Psychiatry, Addiction Psychiatry, and Forensic Psychiatry. Dr. Westreich is Associate Professor of Clinical Psychiatry in the Department of Psychiatry, New York University School of Medicine, and the author of Helping the Addict you Love (Simon and Schuster, 2007), A Parent’s Guide to Teen Addiction  (Skyhorse Publishing, 2017), and Addiction and the Law (American Psychiatric Association Publishing, 2024). Dr. Westreich is Past President of the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry and serves as Consultant on Behavioral Health and Addiction to the Commissioner of Major League Baseball.

Workshop Description

 Using slides, Dr.Westreich will first discuss the different types of opioids and the recent epidemiology of opioid misuse, up to and including the DSM-5-TR diagnosis of Opioid Use Disorder. Second, he will review screening and engaging with the opioid user with the goal of understanding immediate dangers to him or her, the pattern of the opioid use, the user’s narrative for that use, and family and social determinants of use.  Finally, he will explain comprehensive treatment for opioid problems, including overdose prevention, medications, psychotherapies, and peer-led support groups. He will deliver this information from 10:30am-11:30am and lead an interactive case-driven discussion from 11:30am-12:00pm.


Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this workshop:

  • Attendees will be able to summarize the current epidemiology, key risk factors, and core mechanisms of opioid use disorder, citing at least three major trends in U.S. opioid use.
  •  Attendees will be able to use DSM-5-TR diagnostic criteria and at least one validated screening tool to identify and stage opioid use problems and recognize clinical signs of intoxication and withdrawal. 
  • Attendees will be able to create an evidence based initial management plan for patients with opioid-related problems use, including pharmacotherapy options, psychosocial supports, overdose prevention, peer-led support groups and referrals to ongoing care.

 

Target Audience:  Suitable for Psychologists, Social Workers, Licensed Professional Counselors, Psychiatrists, Advanced Practice Nurses, Graduate Students, Marriage and Family Therapists.

Level of Sophistication: This is an introductory level post-graduate continuing education program suitable for all levels of training.

Counselors: CPPNJ has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 6863. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified. CPPNJ is solely responsible for all aspects of the programs.


Psychologists:  CPPNJ is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. CPPNJ maintains responsibility for this program and its contents.

NY Psychologists: Center for Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis of New Jersey is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Psychology as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed psychologists #PSY-0165. 

 

Social Workers: Center for Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis of New Jersey is recognized by the New York State Education Department's State Board for Social Work as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers #SW-0757.

The New Jersey Board of Social Work Examiners, and some other state boards, recognize CEs approved by the New York State Education Department.


COST: Members $40/$50 pre-registration by February 22; CPPNJ Candidates: $25; Students with ID: $15; Non-Members $60/$70 pre-registration by February 22.

Cancellations made prior to three days (72 hours) before the event will receive a full refund minus a $25 administrative fee.  Cancellations made less than 72 hours before the event will be given a refund of half of the registration fees. Refunds will NOT be granted for cancellation requests made on the day of the event.
