Course Description

This course is designed to impart strong skills in the assessment and diagnosis of personality. We will focus on understanding developmental levels of personality organization, studying the spectrum of psychoanalytic personality theories. We will start with a historical grounding in Freud’s early writing about character, then move into a thorough introduction to Ego Psychology with its focus on conflict, defense, and adaption. We will then cover Kernberg’s seminal work on borderline structures. The course will conclude with current relational theories about personality and dissociation. We will establish both a clear grounding in the psychoanalytic theories of personality and an application to your clinical work by using them to inform your understanding of your patients and how they may relate to you.
