Course Description

This course focuses on psychosocial development from infancy through adulthood. Emphasis will be placed on thinking developmentally with and for our patients.

We will integrate classical and contemporary psychoanalytic theories with current findings from infant research, neuroscience, and attachment theory. Key developmental concepts from the major psychoanalytic schools of thought will be applied to clinical work.

Topics covered include pre- and post-oedipal development, the centrality of separation-individuation, the impact of intergenerational trauma, attachment, affect and self-regulation, mentalization, reflective functioning, and physical maturation.

Instructor: Alexandra Granville, LCSW

Alexandra Granville, LCSW has been in private practice treating adults, young adults and couples since 2010. She trained in psychoanalysis (2020), psychoanalyitc-systems couples therapy (2015), and psychoanalytic psychotherapy (2014) at the Center for Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis of New Jersey (CPPNJ). She joined the faculty of CPPNJ in 2020. She is Voluntary Faculty at Rutgers University New Jersey Medical School and has taught and supervised medical students, psychiatry residents, child and adolescent psychiatry fellows and addictions medicine fellows in various topics related to psychotherapy since 2013.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

1. Analyze key psychoanalytic theories: Identify and compare major classical and contemporary psychoanalytic theories as they relate to psychosocial development across the lifespan.

2. Develop clinical interventions based on developmental understanding: Design interventions that reflect a developmental framework, incorporating these into clinical work and its discussion

3. Explore the dynamics of parent-infant interaction: Analyze the role of early relational experiences in shaping attachment, affect regulation, and developmental outcomes, applying these insights to clinical work.

4. Facilitate the development of reflective thinking in patients: Engage patients in exploring their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors within the therapeutic relationship to enhance their capacity for self-reflection, emotional regulation, and deeper understanding of interpersonal experiences.

5. Examine the intergenerational transmission of trauma: Analyze how unresolved trauma is transmitted across generations and apply psychoanalytic concepts to recognize and address its impact on patient functioning.
