Dual Language Acquisition

This workshop is designed for speech-language pathologists seeking a greater understanding and knowledge of providing culturally responsive practice to the multicultural and multilingual population, understanding typical features of dual language acquisition and its impact on speech/language development, and understanding language differences vs language disorders.

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  1. Define cultural responsiveness, cultural competence, and cultural humility.
  2. Define, describe, and identify types of bilingualism. 
  3. Define, describe, and identify typical features of dual language acquisition, including language interference/transfer, silent period, code-switching, language loss/attrition, and accent/dialect/phonetic differences. 
  4. Define, describe, and assess language difference vs language disorder.

Speaker: Elizabeth Atterole, MS CCC-SLP/TSSLD


Elizabeth is a New York State licensed speech-language pathologist. Elizabeth holds a Certificate of Clinical Competence and is a member of the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA). Elizabeth received an Advanced Certificate of Bilingual Speech-Language Pathology from Teachers College, Columbia University and actively provides treatment and assessment for bilingual children. Ms. Atterole has nearly a decade of pediatric experience, working in a variety of pediatric settings, including school-based, center-based, and home-based, for a variety of ages, including early intervention, preschool, and school-age children. Currently, Elizabeth is the Clinical Director of Related Services for New York Therapy Placement Services with the role of providing clinical leadership, mentorship, and guidance to all related service providers, including speech, physical, and occupational therapists.

Who is eligible to earn ASHA CEUs:

Effective July 1, 2011, individuals must meet at least one of the following conditions in order to be eligible to earn ASHA CEUs.

  • ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) Holder
  • Life Member, Membership holder without Certification, or International Affiliate
  • Licensed by a state or provincial regulatory agency to practice independently as an audiologist or speech-language pathologist
  • Credentialed by a state regulatory agency to practice independently as an audiologist or speech-language pathologist
  • Credentialed by a national regulatory agency to practice independently as an audiologist or speech-language pathologist
  • Currently engaged in a Clinical Fellowship, which is supervised by someone with their ASHA CCC
  • Currently enrolled in a masters or doctoral program in audiology or speech language pathology

Course Completion for ASHA CEU's: 

This course is offered for .2 ASHA CEU’s Introductory level, Professional area. Participants will receive a certificate of completion. Successful completion for full ASHA CEU credit requires attendance for the entire course, meeting the contact hours, and completing the course evaluation.

Tuition will be refunded less a $5.00 processing fee, if written notification is received by New York Therapy Placement Services, Inc. up to two weeks prior to the workshop. Two weeks to 48 hours prior to the workshop date: 50%; 48 hours prior to workshop, no refund would be available.
