John Egan is senior program officer for strategic initiatives at Genesis. He expands the expert guidance Genesis provides throughout Maine and in northern New England to help communities overcome barriers and create affordable housing and other projects that support health and wellbeing and generate prosperity. His guidance builds capacity among municipalities, emerging developers, and diverse community groups to plan projects and gain access to resources.

As part of that work, John leads a statewide partnership project that customizes in-person and virtual training to build community capacity to create affordable housing, potentially with funding from MaineHousing. In 2023, the project reached 8 Maine regions, advising more than 60 groups.

John also is part of the Genesis team that regularly shares information with policymakers at the state and federal level on how to expand the development and preservation of affordable housing, particularly in rural areas.

Prior to joining Genesis, John's 30-plus years of community development experience include 20 years at CEI, Inc. as a housing developer and lender and as chief investment officer. At MaineHousing, he was the manager of multifamily programs. John also has worked with nonprofit agencies in Alaska to develop and manage a variety of multifamily and special-needs housing projects.  

John resides in Freeport with his partner of 33 years, Michelle, and is chair of the Freeport Town Council. When not behind the laptop, John enjoys cooking, hiking, and being in the woods.
