Play and Mindfulness Based Strategies: Addressing Children's Needs From the Bottom Up

"Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But, for children, play is serious learning, Play is really the work of childhood.” – Fred Rodgers

This workshop will help you think more critically about utilizing various play and mindfulness strategies with children. You will receive an overview of the modalities, as well as the impact of the mind/body connection on the therapeutic work. Participants will take part in hands-on activities to learn techniques appropriate for rapport building, assessment, and meeting a variety of therapeutic goals.

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to

  1. Describe the basic components of play therapy and mindfulness for working with children
  2. Summarize and provide an overview of the mind-body connection
  3. Identify the neurological underpinnings impacting children and adolescents
  4. Demonstrate at least 3 activities which can be implemented using play and mindfulness-based strategies
  5. Describe strategies for assessment, rapport building and other therapeutic goals within the parameters of the mind-body connection

Speaker: Dr. Victoria Grinman, PhD-LCSW-R


Dr. Victoria Grinman is a psychotherapist, consultant, speaker, and transformation agent often referred to as “the secret weapon to couples” and “the parent whisperer,” a person whom people can confide in and utilize as a resource and expert companion. Dr. Victoria founded Growing Kind Minds, LLC, a private consulting and therapy practice and global community platform that helps people achieve transformation and growth through their lived experiences and trauma.

Dr. Victoria’s research and work center on posttraumatic growth, parenthood, relational success, and supporting people of determination. Her public workshops and specially curated custom trainings for organizations and groups of people aim to empower, inform and provide a visceral experience of transformation that can be transmitted to others and be an article for greater positive change in the world.

Dr. Victoria’s personal history as a refugee immigrant, belief in what is possible, curious nature and passion to highlight the strengths in others provide a base for her efforts to educate and learn from not just the professional community, but also parents and individuals to raise confident and connected children.

Before building a private practice, Dr. Victoria’s experience is rooted in community-based organization and program development, and school-based work for children with differences in life perspectives and abilities.

Dr. Victoria is a dual-licensed clinician in New York and Massachusetts. She holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology and social work from Adelphi University, a master’s in social work from Columbia University, and a Ph.D. in social work from Adelphi University. Dr. Victoria served for many years as an adjunct faculty member for Boston College, Adelphi University and Columbia University schools of social work.

She also holds certifications in aromatherapy and yoga and mindfulness alongside other continuous trainings that she integrates into her practice with special populations.

Dr. Victoria is a longtime clinician volunteer with Experience Camps, an organization that provides children who have lost a loved one with a one-week grief camp experience that is known as the “best week of the year.”

Dr. Victoria is Russian speaking, born in Kiev and raised from a young age in New York by wonderful parents and grandparents. She resides in New York with her sassy Yorkie, Vanna, who often joins her in the therapy room to lend a loving paw.

Who is eligible to earn ASHA CEUs:

Effective July 1, 2011, individuals must meet at least one of the following conditions in order to be eligible to earn ASHA CEUs.

  • ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) Holder
  • Life Member, Membership holder without Certification, or International Affiliate
  • Licensed by a state or provincial regulatory agency to practice independently as an audiologist or speech-language pathologist
  • Credentialed by a state regulatory agency to practice independently as an audiologist or speech-language pathologist
  • Credentialed by a national regulatory agency to practice independently as an audiologist or speech-language pathologist
  • Currently engaged in a Clinical Fellowship, which is supervised by someone with their ASHA CCC
  • Currently enrolled in a masters or doctoral program in audiology or speech language pathology

Course Completion for ASHA CEU's: 

This course is offered for .3 ASHA CEU’s Introductory level, Related area. Participants will receive a certificate of completion. Successful completion for full ASHA CEU credit requires attendance for the entire course, meeting the contact hours, and completing the course evaluation.

Refund/Cancellation Policy:

Tuition will be refunded less a $5.00 processing fee, if written notification is received by New York Therapy Placement Services, Inc. up to two weeks prior to the workshop. Two weeks to 48 hours prior to the workshop date: 50%; 48 hours prior to workshop, no refund would be available.
