PREREQUISITES

Who is this program for:

This Grief Counselor training is designed for professionals with a minimum of a master’s degree in counseling, social work, marriage and family therapy, psychology, or a related field.

Participants should possess foundational knowledge in counseling principles, including family dynamics, human development, and ethical practice. While prior experience in counseling or related fields is not required, it is highly recommended, as this program builds upon these foundational skills to equip participants with advanced tools and techniques for effectively supporting individuals and families experiencing grief.

Overview

The Certified Grief Counselor Certification Training is facilitated by two of the Executive Board Members of the American Association of Forensic Professionals, Inc, (AAFP). This training provides behavioral health professionals with comprehensive training in grief counseling, focusing on the latest theories, assessment techniques, and culturally competent interventions. This certification is designed to equip professionals with the knowledge and skills needed to support individuals, families, and groups through the complexities of grief and loss.

Grief is a universal experience, yet it manifests in unique ways depending on individual, cultural, and situational factors. Behavioral health professionals working with grieving clients must be equipped to navigate both typical grief responses and more complex presentations, such as complicated grief and trauma-related grief. This certification program provides an in-depth understanding of grief, from foundational models like Kubler-Ross to contemporary trauma-informed approaches. It addresses the critical need for specialized knowledge in recognizing and treating different types of grief, ensuring that professionals are prepared to offer effective, compassionate care.

Certification

Upon completion of the training, eligible participants are permitted to test for Certification. The Certified Grief Counselor Certification signifies that a professional has received specialized training in grief counseling and has demonstrated competence in providing evidence-based interventions for individuals and families experiencing loss. The program covers a wide range of topics, including:

·        Theories of grief and loss

·        Grief assessment and diagnosis

·        Counseling techniques

·        Group and family grief counseling

·        Special populations, such as children and marginalized individuals

·        Trauma-informed approaches to grief

Upon completion of the training, eligible participants must pass a comprehensive exam and apply their learning through case study analyses. Certification is awarded upon successful completion, and professionals are required to maintain their certification through recertification with the Clinical Certification Association of Licensed Professionals (CCALP), every three years.
