Course Description

This seminar examines the cycles of shame and hate that are born of destructiveness and are reproduced in destructiveness. We will approach this subject from both a clinical and a cultural perspective. This inquiry will refer to the contemporary, collective dynamisms which are escalating an ‘us’ versus ‘them’ opposition. We will be particularly interested in the construction of sex, body, race and gender in this context. Readings will encompass psychoanalytic theory, the trans-generational transmission of trauma, as well as historical and cultural perspectives. We also will examine the way that these phenomena appear in clinical process.
