Pruning Backyard Fruit Trees: Workshop and Demo

Join Maxwell Norton, UCANR Cooperative Extension Farm Advisor Emeritus, Fruit Trees and Grapes for this free Community Education Workshop on Pruning Backyard Fruit Trees.

There will be a morning session (10 am -12 noon) on pruning topics in the UCCE Classroom at 2145 Wardrobe Ave, Merced.

- Bring your own brown bag lunch.

The afternoon session (1:30 -3:30 pm) with a pruning and planting fruits trees demonstration will be held outdoors at the UC Merced Student Orchard. Directions will be provided at the morning session. Wear warm clothing and appropriate footwear to walk in fields.


In the morning session (10 am -12 noon), you will learn:

  • How to prune young fruit trees
  • Two basic pruning cuts: Thinning and Heading 
  • About the branch collar
  • Where to cut the new bare root fruit tree
  • When and why use a three phase cut


In the afternoon session (1:30 -3:30 pm) which will be held outdoors, you will see:

  • Hands-on orchard pruning demonstration
  • Tree planting demonstration and tips
  • Please wear boots, gloves, and protective eyewear. 
  • If you have them, bring your pruning shears and loppers.
