This year-long advanced Narrative Learning Program is for people who wish to further develop a personal understanding of the Narrative Worldview and its social justice ethics and concepts, with a focus on practice and consultation about clinical work. From our personal experiences and from what we’ve learned from participants in the Certificate Program, when we return to our particular work contexts, we can often become isolated and disconnected from our relationship with the narrative worldview. The goal of this course is to help participants stay connected to and further nourish their narrative practitioner identity and preferred ways of helping.

The Narrative Learning Program builds on NTI's Narrative Certificate Program where learning and thinking about the ideas that inform narrative theory are the focus. Next Steps offers more exposure to these ideas, and more time devoted to practicing narrative skills. In addition, there will be opportunities to bring pieces of your work from your clinical practice for group consultation. Drawing from participants personal and professional lived experiences, the course emphasizes a peer experiential-learning philosophy, conversational teaching style, and community-building orientation. Participants will be invited to share particular interests of skill development to help shape the focus of the group.

Completion of NTI’s Narrative Certificate Program, or an equivalent, and a current clinical practice as a narrative therapist, in any setting, are required for registration.

The 2025–2026 Next Steps for Narrative Learning Program offers TWO options. One group meets monthly for four hours, and the other meets two times per month, two hours per meeting. The online meeting dates and times are as follows:

  • MONTHLY Option: Fridays 1–5 PM Eastern Time: Oct 10, Nov 14, Dec 12, Jan 9, Feb 13, Mar 13, & Apr 10
  • BI-WEEKLY Option: Wednesdays 12–2 PM Eastern Time: Oct 15, Oct 29, Nov 12, Dec 10, Jan 14, Jan 28, Feb 11, Feb 25, Mar 11, Mar 25, Apr 8, Apr 22, & May 6

The meetings will include exploring narrative concepts and ideas, supported by readings. Participants will have opportunities to practice asking questions across different territories of narrative practice. Some meetings will be dedicated to clinical consultations. During the clinical consultation meetings, each participant will be expected to present a narrative interview/therapy conversation (through audio, video, or transcript) 1–2 times during the course of the program. Narrative practices and ethics will inform how we witness and reflect on one another’s work.

To augment the meetings, participants in both groups can choose to opt into 1.5-hour online meetings that will meet one Friday afternoon per month. These small-group meetings will be facilitated by NTI faculty. The small groups allow you to meet regularly with a cohort of individuals, connected by shared values, to help you stay close to your intentions for learning. Participants that choose this option commit to a minimum 80% attendance.

This course will use the Google Classroom platform. You will need a Gmail address to use Google Classroom. A short training will be available to familiarize you with the platform.

Like NTI’s Certificate Program, this course is highly experiential, and draws significantly from participants’ own lives, personally and professionally, as we believe the best way to learn is through a personal engagement with ideas and practices. To be clear, we don’t expect anyone to share anything they prefer to keep private.

To ensure potential participants are informed about the various expectations and hopes associated with this course, we require interested participants to participate in a conversation before registering, to decide together if the course seems a good fit for your hopes for learning. To schedule the initial conversation please email Darcey here, with a subject line of “Next Steps Initial Conversation.”

If you decide to join us, and we hope you will, you will be a member of the third NTI Next Steps cohort! Graduates of the Next Steps program are well positioned to help grow a more socially just Narrative World.
