Objectives: 

  • Identify current clinical guidelines for screening, diagnosing, and differentiating between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes mellitus in children and teens
  • Describe the pathophysiological differences between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes and how these differences influence treatment strategies.
  • Implement evidence-based screening protocols for at-risk individuals, including criteria for early detection of prediabetes
  • Select appropriate pharmacologic for the management of Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, including CD3-directed monoclonal antibody, insulin regimens, oral hypoglycemics, GLP-1 receptor agonists, and SGLT2 inhibitors.
  • Understand new technologies such as continuous glucose monitoring and insulin pumps into diabetes care plans to optimize outcomes.
  • Understand the Role of Nutrition in Type 1 Diabetes Management, including carbohydrate counting and glycemic index education for families
  • Understand the Role of Nutrition and Evidence-based dietary approaches in the Management of Pediatric Type 2 Diabetes
