| Speaker Bio: Carl Richards started The Sketch Guy column in The New York Times from the hills of Utah, crafting clear, relatable insights about money with just cardstock and a Sharpie. The column ran weekly for a decade. This journey began when Carl applied for what he thought was a job as a “security guard,” only to find out the ad actually said “securities.” That slight misstep sparked a lifelong dedication to reshaping how we think about money.
Since then, Carl has become a Certified Financial Planner™, built and sold a successful investment firm, and spoken at financial and investment events worldwide—from Australia to South Africa, the UK, and major economic centers across Europe, Canada, and the United States. His bestsellers, The Behavior Gap and The One-Page Financial Plan, have been translated into over ten languages and continue to resonate globally.
His latest book, Your Money: Reimagining Wealth in 101 Simple Sketches, came out in October 2025. It’s a collection of 101 sketches and essays, designed to spark real conversations about money.
Through his daily podcast, Behavior Gap Radio, which now has over 1,300 episodes and over one million downloads, Carl shares new perspectives on aligning our resources with what truly matters. His latest audio project, 50 Fires, backed by executive producers Chip and Joanna Gaines, explores the intersections of money and meaning with guests like Pete Holmes, David Whyte, Krista Tippett, and his favorite guest by far, his wife, Cori. Carl founded The Society of Advice, a community of financial planners dedicated to the craft of advice. They gather for a monthly online workshop and frequent retreats in Park City, Utah.
When he’s not exploring ideas about money, Carl, a Wilderness First Responder, can be found navigating Utah’s high mountain ridges on foot, skis, or bike. Married to Cori since 1995, they have four kids, whom they consider their best friends. |
| The Intersection of Life and Money When life changes, money changes—and when money changes, life changes. This intersection is where financial planners have the opportunity to do their most meaningful work: guiding clients safely through life‑altering transitions and into their next chapter.
In these moments, the technical skills of traditional planning and the human‑side skills of Financial Transitionist® training become equally essential and equally complex. When the call comes—often unexpectedly—planners step into a role few professionals are trained to navigate. One side requires process, structure, and precise execution. The other, the human side, demands sensitivity, adaptability, and customized support. Ultimately, it’s this human side where client well‑being is shaped and where long‑term retention is earned. This 75‑minute session expands your human‑side toolkit by focusing on three FIT protocols designed to address the subtle but critical challenges clients face during major life transitions:
- Financial Triage Protocol — to prevent destructive or regrettable decisions.
- Transition Fatigue Assessment — to identify burnout early and restore clarity, energy, and confidence.
- Beyond Uncertainty — a four‑step method for guiding clients through the liminal period after a major event.
You’ll leave with actionable ideas and client‑facing processes that help your clients stay grounded, make sound decisions, and move forward—while positioning you as their expert, thinking partner, and safe place when life as they know it is changing. |

| Behavioral Intelligence in Practice: Elevating Client Outcomes Through Psychology and Self-Awareness In today’s dynamic planning environment, technical knowledge alone is not enough. Financial planners must also develop deep behavioral awareness—the ability to recognize and manage client emotions, biases, communication styles, and their own internal attitudes and assumptions. This session explores the key psychological principles that shape financial planning, including behavioral finance and client crisis response, brought to life through real-world scenarios. Participants will learn why developing behavioral competencies is essential for building trust, guiding clients through uncertainty, and fostering long-term financial well-being. This session will also introduce the FPA Competency Model, a powerful new framework designed to help planners assess and build critical behavioral, interpersonal, and professional skills. Attendees will walk away with a clearer understanding of how to intentionally strengthen the “human side” of planning—and why doing so enhances both client success and professional fulfillment. |
