David A. Quam, MD is currently Clinical Professor and Director of Loyola Marymount University’s Healthcare Systems Engineering Master’s program. This program guides students through a systematic approach of applying lean principles and the framework of systems engineering to processes in healthcare with the aim of removing waste, improving efficiency, and addressing inequity. Graduates of this program are embedded throughout the healthcare industry as clinicians, operational leaders, process improvement experts, and consultants.
Prior to his appointment at LMU, Dr. Quam practiced family medicine and held senior-level executive positions within Kaiser Permanente in southern California. He served 12 years as Area Medical Director and Chief of Staff of one of Kaiser Permanente’s largest regions. There, he oversaw the planning, construction, and opening of two hospitals and several medical office buildings, directing nearly $2B in capital projects. He managed the development of multiple clinical services, including cardiac surgery, robotic surgery, and bariatric surgery, as well as several residency and fellowship programs. During his tenure, he hired over 500 physicians. Following this, he served as Assistant Executive Medical Director of the southern California region for KP, overseeing all laboratory, genetics, and pathology services, and led the opening of the state-of-the-art regional reference laboratory in Chino Hills.
Dr. Quam received his bachelor’s degree in biology from LMU, his Master’s in systemic physiology from UC Davis, and his MD from UC Irvine. He completed his residency in Family Medicine at Fontana Medical Center. He enjoys spending time with his wife and three grown children, as well as surfing, traveling, and reading. |
