Aging in a Changing Climate: Putting Experience Into Action

Join us for a transformative virtual summit focused on building climate resilient communities in partnership with older adults.

Climate change and extreme weather present unique challenges, and this summit will make the case for why engaging older adults is essential for effective solutions. We'll demonstrate the importance of intentionally including older residents—including those in their 80s, 90s, and beyond—in planning, developing, and deploying effective community-based responses to climate change.

This summit will connect climate experts, policy leaders, and community members to focus on practical strategies for engaging older adults in building climate resilience. Participants will gain actionable insights into creating communities that intentionally address the needs of older residents and empower them to lead and implement effective responses to climate change and extreme weather—a critical step towards achieving true age equity in climate action.

Hear from Keynote Speaker Danielle Arigoni: We're honored to welcome Danielle Arigoni, author of Climate Resilience for an Aging Nation, as our keynote speaker. Ms. Arigoni's influential work provides a crucial framework for understanding how to build climate resilience with older adults at the community level. Ms. Arigoni's address will provide a powerful foundation for our summit discussions, highlighting the critical role of older adults in building climate resilience. This will lead directly into an engaging panel discussion with state climate leaders, who will explore the practical steps needed to ensure age equity is a central consideration in climate planning and implementation. We are pleased to announce that this panel will feature Hannah Pingree, Director of the Governor's Office for Policy Innovation and the Future in Maine, and Marian Wolz, Resilience and Adaptation Coordinator at Vermont's Climate Action Office.

Day Two Keynote Speakers: We are thrilled to welcome Geoffrey Dabelko, Holly Dabelko-Schoeny, and Amy Lipka, the leaders from Age-Friendly initiatives in Ohio and the pioneers behind the groundbreaking Grey-Green Alliance, as our keynote speakers for Day Two. This innovative initiative integrates sustainability and resilience as a core domain of Age-Friendly work. They will share the story behind the development of this new domain, detail their strategies for promoting adoption across Ohio communities, and discuss how they are learning and adapting based on early experiences and feedback to maximize its impact. Their address will provide a practical example of addressing climate change within the context of lifelong community work and set the stage for the second day's discussions.

Key topics include:

  • Identifying community vulnerabilities and risks
  • Developing community-based solutions that draw on the skills and experience of older adults
  • Promoting health and well-being for a thriving community in a changing climate
