Research shows that many people living with substance use disorders (SUDs) and their families. have also been impacted by problem gambling. For some, gambling and using substances went hand in hand, while others developed the problem well into their recovery processes. This interactive panel will feature individuals in recovery from SUDs and problem gambling (PG) and highlight their lived experiences, recovery capital, strengths, resiliency, and recommendations. To this end, participants will learn specific strategies and techniques for mitigating harm and preventing PG amongst people with SUDs and other mental health challenges (e.g. examples – ADHD, trauma, depression, etc.).

After this panel, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the impacts of problem gambling on individuals with SUDs, people in recovery and their families;
  2. Describe what data and research show about co-occurring Problem Gambling and SUDs; and
  3. Describe 4-6 strategies and techniques that center the multiple pathways of wellness and recovery, strength-based approaches, and the role of the recovery community and service providers in preventing and mitigating harm.

Anyone involved in problem gambling prevention or any other prevention or behavioral health field is more than welcome to attend. If you would like, feel free to share this flyer with your friends or colleagues who may be interested in attending.
