De-Escalation, Crisis & Staying Grounded Under Pressure

This training provides peer supporters with a foundational understanding of de-escalation, crisis response, and maintaining emotional regulation during high-stress situations. Attendees will explore how to recognize signs of escalation, use trauma-informed and recovery-oriented communication strategies, and remain grounded while supporting individuals experiencing emotional distress. The session will also address the scope and limitations of the peer role during crisis situations, including when and how to involve clinical, emergency, or safety staff to ensure appropriate support and safety for everyone involved. Through discussion and practical examples, attendees will strengthen their confidence in responding calmly, compassionately, and professionally under pressure.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Recognize common signs of escalating distress and identify factors that may contribute to crisis situations in peer support settings.
  2. Differentiate between the role and responsibilities of a peer supporter and those of clinical, emergency, or safety professionals during crisis situations.
  3. Apply trauma-informed de-escalation, communication, and self-regulation strategies that promote safety, reduce escalation, and support appropriate responses within the scope of the peer role.

A 1.0 CEU certificate will be awarded to peer professionals after attending the full training and submitting an evaluation.
