Fall Color Natural Dye Workshop

Saturday, September 12, 10AM-1PM

QFA Museum Side Yard

703 S. 2nd St. La Conner, WA 98257

About the Workshop

It's harvest time! Come gather flowers from the garden and preserve summer's sacred color for the dark months ahead. Participants will experiment with bundle dyeing, flower pounding, and vat dyeing using materials from the dye garden: marigolds, cosmos, coreopsis, scabiosa (pincushion flowers), black hopi sunflower seeds, fresh leaf indigo, along with a couple modifiers. Take home beautiful and unique wearable art along with an understanding of how to naturally dye textiles on your own!

About the Instructor

Sulai Lopez is an interdisciplinary artist and educator specializing in natural dyes and utilizing textiles as a means to cultivate connection and creativity within communities.

A weaver, thrifter, and upcycler, she studied theatre, film, and painting in New York City, has a past life working as an award-winning costume designer in Los Angeles, and moonlights as an actor.

Recently she studied with generational weavers and natural dyers in Oaxaca, Mexico, and has spent the last decade researching and experimenting with plants and natural fibers. She is currently based in the Pacific Northwest where she grows her own dye plants and facilitates art workshops throughout the west coast.

A Note on Taxes

As of 10/1/2025, there is a wide range of new taxes and fees that are impacting businesses and nonprofit organizations in Washington State. As a result, our classes, workshops, and educational events are now subject to state and local taxes, and we have had to raise our registration fees. Here is a helpful article which explains more about this change and how it's affecting nonprofits in WA state.
