Rev. Dr. Drew E. Marshall Christian Education Week

Dr. John D. Tolbert, Senior Pastor

Each year, Trinity Missionary Baptist Church is honored to host the Rev. Dr. Drew E. Marshall Christian Education Week. This week was so named by our current pastor, the Rev. Dr. John D. Tolbert, to honor the life and legacy of our former pastor, Dr. Drew E. Marshall. We have set aside this week in order to have a dedicated time of greater, more in depth, teaching of topics of interest to the church at Trinity as well as to our neighbors. Much time has been given to thinking through what will be presented, who will make the presentations, and how to maximize our time together. We ask that you will look over the class list and find two classes that are of interest to you. We are sure that you won’t be disappointed in your selection.

The The History of Worship in the Black Church Tradition

This course explores the rich and transformative history of worship within the Black church tradition. Students will examine the origins, development, and evolution of worship practices in Black churches, tracing their roots from African spiritual traditions through the impact of slavery, emancipation, and the Civil Rights Movement, to contemporary expressions of worship in Black religious communities. Through a combination of historical analysis, theological reflection, and musical exploration, the course highlights key elements such as gospel music, preaching, liturgy, and the role of worship in the cultural and social life of the Black church. By the end of the course, students will have a deeper understanding of how worship in the Black church has served as a source of resistance, resilience, and spiritual empowerment, influencing broader American religious and cultural landscapes.

Key Learning Outcome:

Oftentimes we can’t see God’s movement in our own history which hinders our freedom of expression in worship.

  1. Trace the historical roots and evolution of worship practices within the Black Church, from African spiritual traditions and slavery-era gatherings to contemporary expressions of praise and worship to create a culture for freedom of expression within weekly worship at the Trinity church.
  2. Understand the theological, cultural, and social significance of worship in the Black Church, including its role in community building, resistance, healing, and spiritual formation.
  3. Identify and appreciate key elements of Black Church worship—such as preaching, music, prayer, testimony, and liturgical expression—and reflect on how these elements continue to shape faith and identity today.
