Garden Descriptions

32 Years in the making (Garden #1)

Our gardening path began 32 years ago, with 17 wooded acres and minimal gardening experience. Our goal was to “fit the house and yard/gardens into the surroundings,” which was difficult and, at times, overwhelming. Another goal was to keep as many native plants as we could, while adding commercial plants/bushes for interest and color.

The initial task was to address the front yard/terrain. As an immediate stopgap measure, the 6x6 beds nearest the house were made and fill added. The next project was to develop separate gardens on the property between the house and the road. With woods and rocks covering every area, it took an immense amount of physical work, most of it done by us, to bring each project to fruition. Over time, we added the pond beyond the 6x6 beds. The pond was later updated by professionals with a waterfall added. More 6x6 beds were added to the edge of the driveway so that we could start a vegetable garden there.

We love using the native rocks (or others given to us), hence the rock edgings around the yard and beds. For all these years, we have struggled with filtered light, shade, and poor soil. Many iterations occurred over the 30 years and it continues to evolve. Much of the success or failure is dependent on Mother Nature and whether our plant choices/locations were appropriate.

We welcome your input, ideas, and suggestions as you walk around our property.

Standifer Creek Home (Garden #2) Our property is located on the back of Signal Mountain in Sequatchie County. We bought 10.8 acres on Standifer Creek in 2018 in the Walden Woods subdivision. We are the only one in this area, so we should be easy to find. Turn into drive and go slow, we have a long, steep, windy driveway. There are several rain diversions, berms and rain gardens along the way to prevent washouts.
The developer cleared a large spot for a home site and we are working to restore the property from construction and prior use as a tree farm. We have a couple of native meadows and a path through them to walk into the woods to see the lovely Lady Slipper Orchids. They follow an interesting small path from top of mountain to mid mountain.
There are pollinator gardens, rain gardens, a food garden, a tiny tree orchard and a back yard with prairie plants to withstand the digging of our Malamute and Husky.
