The ASLA guide Decarbonizing the Design Process offers a phase-by-phase structure to decarbonize design through big ideas, strategies, and best practices. Co-author Alejandra Hinojosa will explore the guide and its high-level approach that can be implemented regardless of project type, scope, and scale.
The lecture will also include key considerations, real-world applications, and essential resources to integrate carbon budgeting into the design process. Alejandra will provide recommendations for material specification using the Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) 2014 framework, highlighting ways to reduce impacts from project materials’ embodied carbon, transportation, and installation.

About Alejandra As Sustainability Specialist within LPA’s Sustainability + Applied Research (S+AR) Team, Alejandra is focused on process and progress. LPA Design Studios is a multidisciplinary firm that prioritizes an integrated approach to sustainability which allows Alejandra a unique window of opportunity to effect change at a project, discipline, and firm-wide level. Her passion for environmentalism fuels her capacity to advocate for solutions that drive decarbonization and consider the triple bottom line: people, planet, prosperity. She serves as a co-chair of ASLA’s National Carbon Drawdown Subcommittee and has been collaborating with her committee members to publish educational, research-based guides focused on decarbonizing design and construction specifications. In addition to decarbonization, her research interests lie at the intersection of innovative materials and climate equity, always thinking about how we can design our built environment to prioritize both our ecosystems and our neighbors.
