Trauma 201: From Trauma-Informed to Trauma-Responsive

Description: To move from Trauma 101 to Trauma 201, we will step beyond the trauma informed question: “What happened to you?” into the trauma responsive question: “What did you do to survive?” This shift impacts not just how we relate with those we serve, but how we support one another through peer support, supervision, training, and even organizational policies and procedures. Another aspect of Trauma 201 is exploring both intergenerational trauma and resilience on an epigenetic level. Trauma not only changes our brain, body, and behavior through biologically based fear responses, it also changes our genetic expression and the genes we pass on to subsequent generations. The good news is, while trauma impacts us on a genetic level, so do resilience-based experiences and interventions. Using the three main components of trauma resolution, we will engage trauma myths that keep a culture of nondisclosure in place. Together we will explore how to develop and use our skills to grow, teach, and model ways of being, strategies, and interventions that change individuals, families, systems and ourselves.

Learning Objectives

  1. Explore trauma and toxic stress from the lens of biologically based survival skills and identify and work with the hidden resilience in them.
  2. Recognize and practice addressing trauma myths that support a culture of nondisclosure.
  3. Identify and begin to address intergenerational trauma by exploring intergenerational resilience and strategies known to increase growth and healing and decrease the transmission of toxic stress and trauma.
  4. Frame our ways of being, strategies, and interventions to engage the three main components of trauma resolution.
