Developing an NSF CAREER Application

Tuesdays (Jan 28 and Feb 4) from 10am-12pm PT via Zoom

An NSF CAREER award application is more than an NSF Standard Grant with an education plan added in. Highly competitive awards integrate the research and education plan. Over the course of the two sessions, the presenters will discuss why and how to create a plan that results in a competitive proposal. Participants can expect to walk away with an understanding of the requirements and nuances of an NSF CAREER Award application and 

This series is intended for UCLA faculty with an independent research program who intend to submit an NSF CAREER application in an upcoming cycle. 


NOTE: Prior to participating in this series, registrants are strongly encouraged to participate in Developing and Funding Your Research: A Faculty Development Program, which will be offered in Fall Quarter 2024.


The seminar series will be presented by members of the AtKission Training Group (ATG):


M.S. (Peg) AtKisson, Ph.D.

M. S. (Peg) AtKisson, Ph.D. earned her degree in neuroscience from Tufts University in 2001, after also working in cell biology and cancer biology. After completing her degree, she consulted for Cogniscent Inc. on nanotechnology applications of short DNA sequences as chemical sensors. She began her research development career as a contract grant writer, with clients including the Association for Computing Machines, Wake Forest University, Hunter College, and Tufts University, among others. 


Amanda Welch, Ph.D.

Amanda Welch earned a PhD in biochemistry from the University of Florida, and did her postdoc in molecular physiology at the North Florida/South Georgia Veterans Health System. She combines her passion for science and writing to assist researchers in clearly communicating their scholarly work. At ATG, Amanda serves as the lead consultant for individual proposal development and is a key editor for complex proposal development.
