In classical Japanese literature, oikaze (literally "tail wind") refers to the faint scent one encounters when passing by, or the fragrance wafting from a room. Though once common, the term has fallen into disuse in modern Japan.
Inspired by this term, this lecture focuses on Chapter 25 from the Tale of Genji, Fireflies. Set in the fifth month of the lunar calendar—around Tango no Sekku (the Boys’ Festival)—the story unfolds in a season rich in fragrance.
Participants are invited to experience the chapter through the sense of smell. |
