2025 3Rs Sharing Conference Agenda This agenda will be submitted to AAVSM RACE to offer CE Credits for veterinarians and veterinary technicians in the non-medical category.
MORNING SESSION
8:30 am - Registration, Breakfast, & Exhibitor Connections Check in at registration, grab some food, and connect with your exhibitors who provide critical 3Rs support.
*Note: exhibitors will receive access to the facility at 8am for setup.
9:00 am - Opening Remarks & Updates from 3RsC & NJABR Megan LaFollette, 3RsC
9:10 am - Intellectual House Welcome
- In this talk, we’ll hear from a local speaker from University of Washington about the venue we are in today including its indigenous culture and history. Indigenous respect for animals and connections to the 3Rs will also be made.
9:30 am - AI/ML methods for designing new biologics Neil King, UW
- In this talk, Neil King from University of Washington will discuss artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) techniques for developing new biologics (therapeutics and vaccines). These methods used early in biomedical research allow researchers to completely replace some animal projects, by reducing the number of candidate molecules that move into animal trials.
10:15 am - AAALAC International’s Position Statement on the 3Rs Helen Diggs, AAALAC International
- In this session, Helen E. Diggs, MEd, DVM, DACLAM, Senior Director for North America from AAALAC International will introduce AAALAC International’s new 3Rs Position Statement including reviewing its development, approval, and expected implementation during program review.
10:30 am - Networking Break & Exhibitor Connections
- Visit our exhibitors to learn about how they can help you implement the 3Rs. Each exhibitor features a product or service that is dedicated to 3Rs advancement.
Networking Break Sponsored by Tecniplast
11:00 am - Using MPS For Decision Making in Industry Norman Peterson, Seagen/Pfizer
- In this talk, Norman Peterson from Seagen/Pfizer will discuss using microphysiological systems (MPS) to de-risk toxicity and make decisions in the pharmaceutical industry, ultimately replacing some animal trials.
11:15 am - Validation & Governmental Support/Use of NAMs Nicole Kleinstreuer, NIH*
- In this talk, *Nicole Kleinstruer director of the National Toxicology Program Interagency Center for the Evaluation of Alternative Toxicological Methods, located within NIEHS, and the executive director of the Interagency Coordinating Committee on Validation of Alternative Methods (ICCVAM) will discuss governmental efforts to support and validate the use of non-animal methods (NAMs) and support the 3Rs.
*This speaker’s attendance is pending governmental approval. This talk may be substituted by one from Megan LaFollette from the 3Rs Collaborative who will discuss similar topics with a particular focus on the 3RsC-FDA cross-platform validation project of MPS.
11:45 am - Integrating Automated Genotyping & Colony Management Software into the "Standard of Care" for Reduction Erin Yu & Ron Emerson, Vanderbilt Jessie Janeczek, Transnetyx
12:30 pm - Facilitated Networking Lunch All Speakers & Attendees
AFTERNOON SESSION
1:30 pm - Turning knowing into doing: Implementing experimental design methods for Reduction Brianna Gaskill, Novartis
- In this talk, Brianna Gaskill from Novartis will discuss the results of a workshop training scientists to include sex as a biological variable. This work acts as a critical case study of how to implement better experimental design methods to support the 3Rs principle of reduction.
2:00 pm - 3Rs Culture & Behavior Change: Case Study in Refined Rodent Handling Sarah Thurston, CRL Shannon Ramsey & Melissa Reding, Allen Institute
- In this talk, you’ll hear from three speakers from two institutions (Sarah Thurston from Charles River Laboratories and both Shannon Ramsey & Melissa Reding from Allen Institute) that have built a positive 3Rs Culture/Culture of Care and learn about their success in creating staff behavior change to promote refined rodent handling.
2:45 pm - Networking Break & Exhibitor Connections
- Visit our exhibitors to learn about how they can help you implement the 3Rs. Each exhibitor features a product or service that is dedicated to 3Rs advancement.
Networking Break Sponsored by RapID Lab
3:15 pm - Refining & Reducing in NHP Neuroscience Research through positive reinforcement training, AI, & ML Amy Orsborn, UW
- In this talk, Amy Orsborn from University of Washington will discuss her efforts to apply refinement and reduction to her non-human primate neuroscience research through integrating positive reinforcement training, artificial intelligence (AI), and machine learning (ML).
4:00 pm - 3Rs Resources & Programmatic Support + Closing Remarks Megan LaFollette, 3RsC
- In this final brief talk, Megan LaFollette from the 3Rs Collaborative will briefly highlight resources for the 3Rs programming and specific 3Rs strategies from the 3Rs Collaborative. She will give final closing remarks and ask all attendees to complete a survey.
4:05 - 5:30 pm - Networking with Apps & Cash Bar
- We encourage you to stay for one final networking session until 5:30pm. Small appetizers will be provided and a cash bar will be available.
