This presentation will address how to control your data assets.
The data held by your company is probably its most valuable, yet intangible asset. Most large organizations have a fragmented understanding of what their data assets are, where they are, how good they are, and how they are used. In large, mature organizations, this requires a formal data governance and data stewardship function. In rapidly growing (and successful) companies, there may be no deliberate data management. As a result, the data assets are scattered around the organization in an uncontrolled manner. Data can be lost or duplicated unknowingly. This talk looks at the first step in getting control of your data assets—basically creating a formal inventory of the data files and databases which are essential for running the company. This is a kind of metadata—what files are there? Where are they located? How current are they? What is their quality? How is it updated? How is it used? The value of the data is often unrecognized. Yet, it costs money to gather (or purchase) and lapses in quality (or completeness) can lead to bad high-level decisions. Once that happens, there may be loss of executive confidence in the data. We shall explore ways to “get a handle” on data which was previously unmanaged.
