Arrival: Friday, April 4th between 5-8 pm

Straw Bale Construction Workshop

Interested in strawbale building? Want to learn from award-winning builders? Join the team at Straworks as they showcase strawbale building in action.

This 2-day strawbale construction workshop will feature hands-on building opportunities to work on the cabin Straworks is building at Camp Kawartha.

Saturday, you will learn how to detail the exterior for a natural plaster finish with Deirdre (natural builder, designer and owner of Straworks). Sunday, you will learn how to mix and trowel clay-lime plaster on the interior with Mike (natural builder, plasterer and author of Essential Natural Plasters). You’ll also learn about the entire process of strawbale building from experienced builders.

Don't miss this rare opportunity for in-depth hands-on learning on a code-approved, high-performance, natural and carbon-storing building with two leading professionals. It also includes a tour and slide show about the Camp’s award-winning Health Centre built by the Straworks team 4 years ago.

Over the 2 days, and endless Q & A, we will cover:

  • Building Permits and Alternative Solution Submissions
  • Design fundamentals for straw buildings
  • Building science for straw bale walls
  • How to source and select bales
  • Different methods of installing bales and corresponding framing systems
  • How to properly air seal a straw bale wall
  • Preparing the wall for plaster - trimming, plaster stops, flashing and installing lath
  • Natural plaster mixing, recipes and application
  • And so much more -- alternative heating systems, earthen floors, rubble trench foundations, you name it.

For anyone interested in building a natural home, this workshop is an ideal place to start. It combines hands-on with theoretical learning in a beautiful setting on the shores of Clear Lake.

The package includes:
