Teacher / Mentor Institute (TMI) is a FREE educational workshop for teachers and mentors who plan to support competing BEST Hub student teams. 

  • Click on green Register Now! button to register no later than 29 June for those earning credit and no later than 7 July for others.
  • We need at least 4 participants signed up by the 29 June deadline, to hold the hands-on sessions.

Interested parents can be mentors and attend the training.

The TMI WORKSHOP:

  •  ONLINE Pre-Class Work reading, exercises, and quizzes for background material available by 9 June - required for Credit
  • 3-Day Hands-On Sessions to build and compete with a mini robot built by participant teams to prepare you for this year's competition - required for Credit. These sessions are designed to be a shortened version of the 8-week student BEST season. Participants use BEST returnable robot kit electronics and mini robot consumable kits to build their robot and use provided easyC software to program the control of the robot.  

 

Teacher Professional Training Credit Option

  • We are offering 4.0 CEUs / 40 Hours Profession Development to qualifying teachers via Front Range Community College.
  • Teachers must successfully complete quizzes and exercises from Pre-Class Work and must fully participate in the 3-Day Hands-On Sessions.
  • The CEU document fee is $30 to receive the credit.
  • More instructions to be provided on how to apply to receive credit and pay the fee.


Safety Instructions: We will follow the safety protocols in place at the time of the workshop. We will provide additional instructions.

ONLINE Pre-Class Work:

We will provide the pre-class instructions and material at the blue button link below by 9 June. 

The online website reading and viewing material includes the following topics:  

  1. TMI Workshop Introduction including BEST Robotics and Safety
  2. Engineering and Engineering Design Process Introduction
  3. Software Introduction including easyC Software Programming Chart Preview
  4. Robot Building including units from VEX Robotics Curriculum
  5. Workshop Mini-Robot Game and Competition Rules
  6. BEST Engineering Notebook Examples including Judging Introduction

3-Day Hands-On Sessions:

  • Hands-on sessions focused on using the Engineering Design Process to design, fabricate, program and test, and improve their team's mini-robot.
  • Teams create a mini-engineering notebook with feedback provided via judge scoresheet scores and comments. 
  • Closing out the workshop are additional BEST season details and planned panel discussions with experienced BEST teachers, mentors, and students.

  • We are planning to provide lunch and ask you to bring a beverage.  
  • We will provide an email with instructions to obtain and load an easyC software license prior to the workshop. 
  • Attendees are asked to bring - if available - a windows laptop and basic tools (e.g., electric drill, screwdrivers, wrenches, small saw, scissors, clamps, and tin snips) AND your phone chargers.
