Description:

The Dual Diagnosis Model attends to the concerns of both severe and persistent mental illnesses (SPMI) and substance abuse the provide the maximum opportunity for recovery and symptom management. It encompasses a stage-wise treatment model that is non-confrontational, follows behavioral principles, considers interactions between mental illness and substance abuse, and has gradual expectations of abstinence. These components are observed and measured through the use of the Dartmouth Assertive Community Treatment Scale (DACTS) to determine adherence to the evidence informed model.

This workshop will explore the key elements of the Dual Disorder Model around how they are efficacious in treating individuals with co-occurring disorders. They will additionally be provided practical examples of how to apply components of the DD Model to service provision as measured by to the DACTS Scale.

Michael Sanford, MSSA, is a consultant and trainer at the Center for Evidenced Based Practices (CEBP) at Case Western Reserve University and its Ohio Substance Abuse and Mental Illness Coordinating Center of Excellence (Ohio SAMI CCOE) initiative. He provides technical assistance and program evaluation to organizations that are implementing evidence-based practices, emerging best practices, and other strategies that improve services and outcomes for people diagnosed with severe mental illness and substance use disorders. Mr. Sanford received his undergraduate degree from Michigan State University in East Lansing, MI and his graduate degree in Social Administration from the Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH.
