This one-day class is the classroom module of The Prairie Enthusiasts' prescribed burn crew member training. Information in the class is intended to be applicable to prescribed fires conducted by The Prairie Enthusiasts' Chapters in the Upper Midwest.

Subjects covered in this class include prairie and fire ecology, fire behavior, the use of prescribed fire in land management, prescribed burning techniques, safety and PPE, prescribed burn plans, and equipment. Course content is focused on relatively small (1-50 acres) prescribed burns commonly conducted in the Upper Midwest for the restoration and management of prairies and savannas, with an emphasis on the use of hand tools.

The classroom module of the course will be followed by an equipment field training module that will occur at a yet to be determined date. The equipment field training module will allow participants to learn about and practice the use of various hand tools commonly used for relatively small (1-50 acres) prescribed burns in the Upper Midwest. The registration fee you pay for this classroom module of the training will cover the subsequent field training module when it is eventually scheduled. Participants are welcome to attend the classroom portion of the training without attending the subsequent equipment field training, but completing both modules is required to obtain certification of completion of The Prairie Enthusiasts' prescribed burn crew member training.
