The Science Behind the Management of Cheatgrass in the Colorado Front Range

In light of ongoing concerns about invasive cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum), we're welcoming Tim Seastedt to share his in-depth knowledge of plant ecology and invasive species on Colorado's Front Range. Cheatgrass has been presented as an indeterminate threat requiring expensive, pesticide-intensive actions. This approach to plant species management is often under-informed and insufficient, given the complexities of the climate crisis. Professor Seastedt will summarize over a decade of his research on cheatgrass to help clarify the impacts of this invasive on biodiversity and ecosystem services.

Tim Seastedt is Professor Emeritus, Dept. of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and Senior Research Fellow of INSTAAR at CU-Boulder. He has authored numerous research articles on plant ecology and invasive species in the Colorado Front Range. He has been a weed manager on 500 acres of land for 20+ years and crew leader for Wildlands Restoration Volunteers for over a decade. His current activities focus on land management actions that enhance nature-based climate resiliency.
