Bridging Art and Science at Horn Point Lab provides space for those who have an interest in the natural world and how science can be translated into art. In discovering the plants and animals that live in the Choptank River and creating your very own pysanka, you will become both a scientist and an artist. In this exciting workshop, Coreen Weilminster, artist, science communicator, and educator, will introduce us to the art of creating Pysanky, a traditional Ukrainian art, using nature inspiration and life we find in Choptank River habitats.

Coreen Weilminster, has been writing pysanky for 40 years, learning the art form from ancestors of the Slavic (Rusyn) region of the Carpathian Mountains. Coreen teaches classes on the writing of a traditional Pysanky, ancient Ukrainian wax-resistant eggs, featuring symbolic, geometric, and nature-based folk motifs dyed in specific traditional color sequences. Not only is Coreen the talented artist of Illuminate the Wow, she is a science communicator and educator who works for the Chesapeake Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve which is part of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, supporting Environmental Literacy in Maryland, and has been working in the world of science for 34 years. I have a professional career in Environmental Literacy, which affords me opportunities to observe, wonder at, and capture (through art) this gift of a planet. I believe that science and art are twins – born of parents “Wonder” and “I wonder?”… I think my professional life and my artist life beautifully merge in this philosophy. Get ready to explore the shallow waters of the Choptank River! Be prepared for an adventurous, hands-on outdoor learning experience discovering the fascinating plants and animals that inhabit the shallow waters along the Choptank River! ● In this exciting workshop, you become scientists using seine nets to capture fish, grass shrimp, sea nettles, crabs, and other shallow-water plants and animals in their natural habitat. ● We will investigate the oyster reef community and gather information about the creatures that call oysters, home. ● Tow a specialized net to capture microscopic plankton, and observe them under microscopes to discover the amazing universe of tiny plants and animals that are invisible to the naked eye. All of this will build a story of the local Choptank River ecosystem, transformed onto an egg canvas with delightful colors, shapes, and nature designs. |
