NHANRS Presents:
A Vernal Pools Workshop
Wednesday, March 26, 2025
1.0 Credit Hours
WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION
This workshop will consist of dinner at the Common Man in Concord and a tag team presentation by Dr. Purrenhage and Dr. Steinberg from the University of New Hampshire on vernal pools, the species which utilize them, and their importance in the overall landscape. This presentation will include a discussion of the defining characteristics of a vernal pool and how to identify the herpetofauna (reptiles and amphibians) that utilize them in the State of New Hampshire by sight, sound, and/or their eggs.
PRESENTERS
Jennifer Purrenhage – A Principal Lecturer in the Department of Natural Resources & Environmental at the University of New Hampshire, Dr. Purrenhage’s research centers on the impacts of aquatic and terrestrial habitat quality (at local and landscape scales) on pond-breeding amphibians and freshwater turtles –two of the most endangered vertebrate taxa worldwide. She has used a wide range of methods---from molecular analyses and small-scale behavioral studies to large, landscape-scale field experiments---to study the ecological implications of habitat alteration for herpetofauna. Current projects stem from long-term monitoring of salamanders and freshwater turtles in southern New Hampshire, as well as networked research through the NSF-funded Ecological Research as Education Network (EREN). Please follow this link for a description of her past research. https://colsa.unh.edu/person/jennifer-purrenhage
David Steinberg – A Senior Lecturer in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of New Hampshire, Dr. Steinberg seeks to involve students in authentic research experiences and has helped develop and lead several participatory science projects through NSF-funded Ecological Research as Education Network (EREN). These projects focused on vernal pool phenology and freshwater turtle sex ratios and were designed to be integrated into undergraduate curricula. He also co-leads the UNH SPARCnet site (terrestrial salamander population monitoring with undergrads).
A plated dinner will be provided. Please select your dinner option when registering. ⦁ Grilled Steak Tips – Topped with roasted peppers and onions ⦁ Statler Walnut Chicken – Apple stuffing and cider glaze
