Description:

Participants will learn many skills and tools when working with the teen client struggling with substance use. Ways to ask questions to an adolescent and how to build rapport in order to receive as much honest information as possible will be taught. Ways that adolescents present, how they feel about help, implications with engaging them in stages of change, and techniques steeped in motivational interviewing will be learned. How to determine competency in treating, level of care decisions, and how to feel more confident when talking to a teen about use and self-medication will be reviewed. Other treatment modalities such as strengths based, CBT and psychoeducation will be covered.

Objectives:

Discuss rapport building, ways to engage, and how to begin asking questions that will illicit as much honest information as possible will be reviewed. Techniques on how to assess in a motivational interviewing way will be learned.
Determine competency, documentation tips, harm reduction vs. abstinence and how to begin the treatment process will be learned.
Treatment modalities that will be learned are Motivational Interviewing, CBT and strength based along with information on how to educate a teen in a way that will engage them will be covered.

Presenter Information

Jennifer Haywood, LISW-S, LICDC-CS

Jennifer has been training helping professionals since 1998. Her specialties include diagnosis, motivational interviewing, addictions focus topics, drug free workplace trainings, ethics, and supervision. Jennifer goes to agencies state-wide to train staff in treatment models in order to help their clients and trained all the behavioral health and medical social workers at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Motivational Interviewing in 2011/2012. Currently, Jennifer is teaching at OSU in the MSW and BSSW programs, focusing on the addictions minor the university is offering, clinical diagnosing and motivational interviewing.

Jennifer has a private practice in Worthington, Ohio where she specializes in treating addicts and alcoholics, families of addicts and alcoholics, depression, anxiety, post-partum women, women’s issues, adolescent issues (14+ only), and relationship struggles.

Jennifer Haywood has been a clinical social worker and addiction specialist since 1996. She received her master’s in social work (MSW) from The Ohio State University and her chemical dependency specialty through her internship at the Addiction Recovery Center at Harding Hospital in Worthington, Ohio. Jennifer has a BA in psychology from the University of Maryland.

Through the years Jennifer has had a variety of work experiences including counseling and supervising in dual diagnosis facilities. Her extensive experience ranges from outpatient individual, marital, group and family counseling with mental health and substance abuse cases, to supervising an adolescent AOD unit and a children and adolescent dual diagnosis unit.

Since 2003, Jennifer has been adjunct teaching at The Ohio State University in the bachelor’s Science Social Work (BSSW) and in the MSW programs with a specialty in diagnosis, theory, mental health and addictions practice classes. She has been teaching the diagnosis course since 2003 and has been teaching Motivational Interviewing and various Addiction courses for many years. Jennifer has also taught at Columbus State Community College and at Capital University. At Columbus State she supervised students for 10 years in their field placement experiences. Jennifer's 24 years of experience in the addictions field allow her to assess, diagnose and treat clients with the expertise needed. Jennifer is currently open for new clients and can guide anyone with questions about the right "fit" when choosing one of the clinicians she supervises. Click on the contact link to email her.
