Our Keynote Speakers

Kymyona Burk, Ed.D.

Dr. Kymyona Burk is a Senior Policy Fellow at ExcelinEd. In this role, she supports states pursuing a comprehensive approach to K-3 reading policy by assisting state leaders in building new or improving existing K-3 reading policies, with a heavy focus on supporting successful policy implementation.


Kymyona most recently served in Mississippi as the Executive Director for the Jackson Public School District’s Office of Teaching and Learning and led all aspects of the district’s instructional programming. Prior to this, she was the State Literacy Director at the Mississippi Department of Education where she led the implementation of Mississippi’s Literacy-Based Promotion Act. Kymyona began her career as an elementary reading teacher and has also taught middle and high school English. At Jackson State University, she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science, Master of Arts in Teaching English, Master of Science in Education Administration and Supervision and a Doctor of Education in Early Childhood Education.

Antonio A. Fierro, Ed.D.

Dr. Antonio A. Fierro is a former Texas State Teacher of the Year and is currently the Vice President of Professional Learning and Academics with the 95 Percent Group. For almost 20 years, he was a member of the national LETRS (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling) cohort of literacy consultants led by Dr. Louisa Moats and sits on the advisory board of LETRS 3rd edition.


Dr. Fierro has contributed to several literacy curricula for English learners and is co-author of Kid Lips®, a curriculum that teaches the articulatory features of English phonemes. His areas of interest include early literacy instruction, improving the learning experience of pre-service teaching candidates, and research and practice that impacts English learners. He is also dedicated to advancing the knowledge base and understanding of dyslexia and other reading disabilities. Dr. Fierro currently sits on the national board of The Reading League.



Dr. Matthew Burns

Dr. Matthew Burns is the Fien Professor of Special Education at the University of Florida and an Assistant Director of the University of Florida Literacy Institute. He is one of the leading researchers about using data to determine individual or small-group interventions, multitiered systems of support, and facilitating problem-solving teams. He is a past editor of School Psychology Review and Assessment for Effective Intervention. Dr. Burns’s research focuses on the use of assessment data to determine individual or small-group interventions. A coauthor of the Path to Reading Excellence in School Sites (PRESS) reading intervention program, he has published over 210 articles, book chapters, and books.



Dr. Tracy White-Weeden

Dr. Tracy White-Weeden is a global keynote speaker, a forwardthinking leader, and a fervent literacy advocate. White advocates for literacy as a fundamental human right of the 21st century. With over 28 years of educational leadership experience, White has devoted her life to co-creating evidence-aligned innovative programs. These programs, propelled by exceptional teams, create transformative educational outcomes for children and adults.


As the President and CEO of Neuhaus Education Center (NEC), White inspires stakeholders and advocates to champion a vision of Literacy for All. Drawing on her extensive experience with change management, she provides valuable counsel to accelerate literacy results, regardless of zip code. This involves empowering educators to propel students to proficient and advanced levels of achievement.


White’s unwavering dedication extends to serving all children and families, with respect for the dialect or the home language they are loved in. She provides consultation to state department representatives, central office leaders, and school principals on change management linked to implementation science.


White’s commitment is evident whether the setting is urban, suburban, or rural. She firmly believes in empowering educators to become the most impactful change agents in society. White believes that when educators are apprenticed based on proven science, they win at their work. By elevating effective literacy transformation for nonprofit, university, public, charter, and private school communities, White is dedicated to transforming the family tree through literacy.
