Gone But Not Forgotten: Victorian Mourning & Funeral Customs

Step inside this house in mourning with its black bunting and covered mirrors and learn about the Victorian customs that a family went through upon the death of a loved one. A most unique and interesting exhibit that honors the former homeowner of Hearthside, Simon E. Thornton, who died here in 1873. A fully-guided, 90-min. tour is given by informative guides dressed in their mourning attire. This elaborate exhibit, set throughout three floors of the home, features different aspects of mourning customs, accompanied by artifacts such as hair jewelry, fashions, coffins, and embalming tools.
