The Price of Playing: Navigating Burnout in

Play Therapy Supervision

Presented by: Julia Copley & Machen Champion

Burnout isn't a personal failing - it's a signal. This workshop reframes burnout in play therapy supervision through a capacity lens, addressing systemic pressures and equipping supervisors to sustain both themselves and their supervisees with creativity, reflection, and care.

AM Session-Pathological Demand Avoidance Play Therapy Learning Objectives:

1-Describe how PDA presents within the play therapy room.

2-Differentiate PDA from overlapping childhood diagnoses to guide play-based clinical decision-making.

3-Utilize CCPT and AutPlay® frameworks to implement affirming, low-demand support for PDAers and their families.

PM Session-The Price of Playing: Navigating Burnout in Play Therapy Supervision Objectives:

1-Differentiate a capacity-based model of burnout from a symptom-reduction model, and apply this lens to their own play therapy supervisory work.

2- Identify systemic stressors specific to play therapy practice and describe how these stressors intersect with supervisee and supervisor burnout.

3- Recognize clues of burnout in themselves as play therapy supervisors and in their supervisees.

4- Utilize experiential, play-based methods to assess their current supervisory capacity and identify sources of depletion versus restoration.
