Gristmills and Slavery

How can a map showing a gristmill help us to better understand enslavement and the enslaved? Join archaeologist and researcher Wendy Harris as she helps us learn to dive deeper into documents to discern what is not obvious, but that contain important and often hidden history.

Wendy E. Harris is an archaeologist and researcher who helped form Cragsmoor Consultants in 2001. Her clients have included the Open Space Institute, the Nature Conservancy, the Joint Historic Preservation Commission of Wawarsing and Ellenville, the Historical Society of Shawangunk and Gardiner, and the Shawangunk Mountains Scenic Byway. Cragsmoor Consultants has also served as consultant to the New Jersey Historic Trust. She has received the Degrees of Master of Arts and Master of Philosophy in Anthropology from New York University, and are members of the Register of Professional Archaeologists.


Prior to forming Cragsmoor Consultants Wendy E. Harris served as staff archaeologist for the New York District U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. She is also a co-author of Yama Farms: A Most Unusual Catskills Resort (2006) and a contributor to the collection Tales of Gotham: Historical Archaeology, Ethnohistory and Microhistory of New York City edited by Meta F. Janowitz and Diane Dallal and published by Springer in 2013. 

Thomas J. Ruller retired from his position as New York State Archivist, a role he held since 2015. An active professional for 35 years, he is the author of several peer-reviewed journal articles and reviews on the use of technology in Archives and the preservation of records in electronic form. Tom has been a consultant for several State governments and other organizations focusing on electronic records management and preservation. He remains actively engaged as a Board Member and Steward of the Archives Partnership Trust.
