Early Intervention is the Key! Autism Diagnosis and Management in Primary Care

Featured Speakers

Dr. Abigail Ley is a pediatric neurologist at the Nicklaus Children’s Hospital Brain Institute. She earned her medical degree from the Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis. Dr. Ley completed her residency in pediatrics and a fellowship in child neurology and neurodevelopmental disabilities at George Washington University/Children's National Health System in Washington, D.C. Her clinical expertise includes autism spectrum disorder and other neurodevelopmental conditions.

Ms. Quatiba Davis, M.Ed., BCBA, LABA, LBA, IBA, Chief Clinical Officer at ABA Centers, is a distinguished Board-Certified Behavior Analyst with a remarkable career trajectory characterized by leadership, innovation, and a steadfast commitment to enhancing the lives of individuals and families through Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA).

Katie Wentley is the Water and Wandering Program Manager at the Autism Society of America. Katie is passionate about the safety of the Autism community using a multitiered approach with a focus on preventative strategies. Katie has spent her career teaching, working with, and learning from the Autism community in the classroom, the pool, the kitchen, and the gym. Most recently, with the Autism Society of America, Katie developed Safety on the Spectrum: Accessible Aquatics™ to address critical issues of preventable water-related death in the Autism community. This is a gold standard training increasing education across the Autism community and equipping aquatics professionals with the support needed to increase safety for Autistics in and near water in local communities.

Objectives: 

  1. Differentiate between autism spectrum disorder and other neurodevelopmental conditions to ensure accurate diagnosis and tailored interventions.
  2. Screen for autism spectrum disorder using evidence-based tools and protocols in clinical practice to support early detection.
  3. Implement intervention strategies that align with current autism spectrum disorder guidelines to improve patient outcomes.
  4. Collaborate with an interprofessional team to improve care coordination and communication when implementing interventions for individuals with autism spectrum disorder.
  5. Understand the unique risk of autistic children and drowning and outline recommendations for drowning prevention and swim education

Continuing Education (CE) credits for psychologists are provided through the co-sponsorship of the American Psychological Association (APA) Office of Continuing Education in Psychology (CEP). The APA CEP Office maintains responsibility for the content of the programs.
