According to National Public Radio, as of September 3, 2021, Hurricane Ida "closed schools for more than 250,000 students across Louisiana." Students in the Louisiana lowcountry like St. Charles Parish "had been back in the classroom for less than a month while navigating a resurgence in the COVID-19 pandemic when Hurricane Ida blew through the parish, ravaging district facilities" (Hunter, Michelle. Nola.com. September 4, 2021). State and community leaders in Acadiana pledge to reopen schools as resources permit - some beginning as soon as September 7.

But, as schools across the Gulf Coast struggle to serve students in the aftermath of both a record storm and a lingering pandemic (some schools are giving out $100 for emergency nutrition, hydration and even transportation), teachers and families from Mamou to Mobile will continue to need educational resources and support to root out academic regression, replenish teaching supplies, disposables and shareables and recover access to virtual learning opportunities and educational technology.

For the next five weeks (Labor Day to October 11), the Southern Center for Child Advocacy needs your help to raise $100,000 for education relief and recovery on the Gulf Coast and to continue our mission to increase opportunities for educational advocacy across the South and Southwest.

When five weeks are up, the SCCA Volunteer Board of Directors will review grant applications (submissions will begin during the fourth week of the campaign - the application for students and teachers will be available at our website on Monday, October 4, 2021). Depending on the amount of money we raise, SCCA will offer $1000, $2500 and $5000 grants to students, teachers and families in the areas impacted by Hurricane Ida for teaching supplies, learning materials and educational technology.

When fundraising ends, Grantees will be identified in around two weeks and awards distributed by mid-November!
