Course Description:

This course provides an overview of assessment principles and practices in contemporary higher education, and promotes a general understanding of academic assessment, specifically the assessment of student learning outcomes. An emphasis is placed on using assessment as a tool that clearly leads to improvement of student learning. Topics include the history and context of assessment in higher education, issues related to accountability and continuous improvement, effective tools for authentic assessment, and emerging trends in assessment and accountability.

Participant Learning Outcomes:

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

• Explain various paradigms of assessment
• Define and use terminology essential to assessment work
• Create an assessment plan that follows best practices, including writing clear outcomes, selecting aligned measures, and setting realistic targets
• Analyze and report assessment data
• Create a positive culture of assessment

Kristen A. McIntyre (Ph.D., North Dakota State University) is a full professor in the Department of Applied Communication at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock and serves as the Provost's Faculty Associate in Assessment. She directs the ACOM 1300: Introduction to Communication program as well as the UA-Little Rock Communication Skills Center. Her co-authored publications in communication education can be found in Communication Quarterly, Communication Teacher, The Communication Centers Movement in Higher Education, Best Practices in Experiential and Service Learning in Communication, and The Handbook of Communication Training: A Best Practices Framework for Assessing and Developing Competence.
