Meet Brother Dan Hammerberg, 32°

Dan was elected Constable of Spalding Township in November 1984 and again in November 1988. He served as Constable for six years. Dan joined the Spalding Township Fire Department on December 5, 1985. He completed fire training levels A and B in 1986 (Fire Fighter I) and started teaching firefighter training through the Michigan Fire Fighters Training Council in 1989. He completed levels C and D (Fire Fighter II) in 1992. Dan is a fire officer 3 and fire instructor 2 certified by the MFFTC (Michigan Fire Fighters Training Council). He served as Captain and training officer of the fire department for 10 years and currently serves as Fire Chief. He is currently active with the department and has served as Fire Chief for 22 years.

He got his Michigan EMT license in September of 1987 and served with the Hermansville Rescue Squad actively running EMS calls for 20 years and although he is no longer active, has served a total of 30 years with the organization. He served as Vice President for 6 years and President for 4 years. Dan continues to hold a valid Michigan EMT/IC license. He got his Michigan EMS IC license (EMS Teaching license) in 2000 and has taught EMS classes for 20 years. H served as president of the Menominee County Firefighers and Menominee County Fire Chiefs Associations for 18 years. Within those 18 years Dan served as the volunteer fire service representative on the Menominee County Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC), Menominee County Emergency Operations Center (EOC), and the Menominee County E911 Governing Board. He was on the E911 governing board when Menominee County created their 911 dispatch center. He served as a contract coordinator for the Michigan Fire Fighters Training Council administering fire fighter 1 and 2 state exams in Alger, Luce, Schoolcraft, Delta, Dickinson, and Menominee counties for 8 years. Dan served as the Upper Peninsula Vice President (UP representative) on the Michigan Fire Service Instructors Association board for 3 years. Dan is currently a lifetime member of the Michigan Fire Service Instructors Association. Dan was honored to be awarded UP Regional Fire Instructor of the Year in 2003 and MFSIA Fire Instructor of the Year in 2013 by the Michigan Fire Services Instructors Association. He has served as a volunteer reserve deputy sheriff for the Menominee County Sheriff Department since 2008. In this capacity he helps out at parades and special events where additional personnel are needed. He also conducts patrol of the rural areas of the county checking to assure seasonal properties are secure and checking business properties to assure they are secure. Dan also backs up the full time deputies when his assistance is needed. Dan has been in full time employment with the State of Michigan, Licensing and Regulatory Affairs, Bureau of Fire Services, Fire Fighter Training Division since December of 2008. Here he assists in supervising 26 contract coordinators who administer fire fighter certification exams, review and recommend approval of fire instructor applications, review and recommend approval of reciprocity applications, assist firefighters with their fire training related inquiries, and deliver fire service courses related to certification, instruction, safety and leadership.
