Lockerly Arboretum – Permanent Part-Time Educator Job Description
Job Description: Lockerly Arboretum is seeking an energetic individual for a permanent part-time position with our education department. The primary purpose of this position is leading school field trips. This includes the preparation and set up for field trips, running them and clean up afterwards. These range from PreK to high school level, are 3-4 hours in length, and occur almost entirely outdoors.
Outside of field trips, work will vary depending on the applicant qualifications, but may include the program development, working special events after hours, horticultural work on the grounds, care and feeding of Lockerly’s reptile collection, etc.
This position will work approximately 20 hours per week year-round. During a maximum of 4 weeks in the summer, a full-time 40 hour work week is required to work our youth summer camp programs.
Reports to the Director of Education
Required Qualifications: ● Minimum age of 18 years old ● background check required. ● Ability to work on weekday mornings. Field trips are scheduled Tuesday – Friday between 9:00 am and 2:00 pm. You must be available to work 2-3 mornings during this time weekly. ● Ability to work 1-2 Saturdays a month. ● Flexibility – field trips are usually scheduled more heavily in March – May and September – November. Duties will vary depending on scheduling, and flexibility is a must. Other job requirements may include: curriculum development, manual labor on the grounds, reptile care and feeding, special events in the evenings or weekends, representing Lockerly at STEM nights, etc. ● Comfort working outdoors in all weather conditions. Field trips occur rain or shine, hot or cold. Summer camps take place in June and July, and applicants need to be prepared for hot, humid outdoor summer work. Experience and ability working with children in these conditions is a must.
Preferred Qualifications: ● An advanced degree in education, environmental science, outdoor education or related field. ● Experience in herpetology/reptile maintenance and care ● First Aid/CPR certifications
