🍀 Ireland🍀

It’s that time of year when shamrocks, pots of gold, and little leprechauns start popping up everywhere. Green becomes everyone’s favorite color, and it always makes me think back to one of my favorite trips - Ireland. No matter the season, Ireland is a land of rolling green hills and rich history that stretches back through the ages.

I wanted to share some lovely memories from my trip to show you why Ireland should definitely be on your must-see list. A few years ago, we flew out of Boston in mid-September to celebrate my anniversary and my friend and neighbor’s birthday. We were expecting the usual cold and rain September weather, but to our pleasant surprise, each morning greeted us with sunshine and warm, summer-like temperatures. Even the locals were impressed.

Ireland Adventure: Must-See Places and Things to Do from Dublin to Kilkenny

Ireland is a land of lush green landscapes, ancient castles, lively music, and warm smiles. Whether you’re travelling with family or just love exploring, this journey through Ireland’s top spots promises memories to last a lifetime. We started in Dublin and followed a fantastic route through Galway, the small town of Doolin, Killarney, the Ring of Kerry, Cobh, and Kilkenny.

☘ Dublin — Where History Comes Alive

Dublin is a city full of charm and surprises.

  • Trinity College & The Book of Kells: Kids will love the huge old library and the vividly illustrated ancient manuscript.
  • Guiness Brewery- A must see for those beer drinkers, which I was first in line!
  • Kilmainham Gaol- A jail full of stories of Irelands past. The song "Grace" is a ballad that tells a story of Grace Gilfford and Joseph Plunkett who married in the prison right before Plunkett's execution. So special, late in the night you will hear it played and sung by all in the local bars.
  • Dublin Castle
  • Christ Church Cathedralï»ż

Galway — The Heart of Irish Culture

Galway’s colorful streets and lively atmosphere are infectious.

  • Stroll through the Latin Quarter with its street performers and artisan shops: Shopping was done while the men went and golfed.
  • Explore Salthill Promenade for seaside fun and maybe spot some surfers.
  • Take a ferry to the Aran Islands if you want a day trip full of nature and traditions.

ï»żVillage of Cong- The Quiet Man-The Falconry

  • I grew up watching The Quiet Man, so I just had to visit the place where Maureen O'Hara and John Wayne wowed everyone with their on-screen chemistry.
  • We then headed to Ireland's School of Falconry at Ashford Castle. To watch the beauty and grace as my husband, Dave, held out his hand and the Falcon floated in. Glad it was him and not me the Falcon was a big bird.

Doolin — Traditional Irish Music Capital

This small village is a treasure box of music and coastal beauty.

  • Catch a live traditional music session in cozy pubs (kid-friendly during early hours).
  • We gave a toast to our anniversary and even got lucky to sit and have beer with a couple that just go married that day.
  • Visit the nearby Cliffs of Moher for jaw-dropping views—there are safe paths and visitor centers for families. The view really has no words. To stand in awe and just appreciate all that we have.

Killarney — Gateway to Stunning Nature

Killarney National Park is a nature playground for all ages.

  • Horse-drawn carriage rides through the park are fun and relaxing.
  • Explore Muckross House and gardens with picnic areas and walking trails.
  • Keep eyes peeled for red deer roaming freely!

Ring of Kerry — Scenic Drive and Outdoor Adventures

This famous circular route is packed with picture-perfect landscapes.

  • Stop at charming villages like Cahersiveen for local crafts. Even take a sip of a traditional Irish Coffee.
  • Take easy hikes or beach breaks along the way.
  • Consider a boat trip to see Skellig Michael’s dramatic cliffs, weather permitting, where two Star Wars movies were filmed.
  • Sheep Herding Dog Demonstration: We watched as the owner sent his dog half a mile up the hill, then whispered come. The dog came a running. Amazing

Cobh — Ireland’s Titanic Connection

This historic port town offers lots to discover.

  • Visit the Cobh Heritage Centre to learn about Titanic and emigration stories. To stand on the ground where passengers waited to board in hopes of arriving in a brand new world. Pieces of the pier still stands where the Titanic tied up to.
  • Walk around the colourful waterfront with ice cream stops and playgrounds.
  • Take a short ferry ride to Spike Island, a fascinating former prison and military site.

Kilkenny — Medieval Magic and Quirky Streets

Kilkenny is like stepping back in time with its castles and narrow lanes.

  • Tour Kilkenny Castle and its lovely grounds.
  • Explore the local markets and shops for unique souvenirs.
  • Don’t miss the Medieval Mile Museum which tells the city’s story in a kid-friendly way.

Tips for a Smooth Trip-

  • Pack layers and rain gear — the weather can be changeable.
  • Plan a mix of driving, walking, and boat or ferry trips to keep everyone interested.
  • Take your time and just take it all inï»ż.

The people and the sights made this trip one I will never forget. The best part, it was only the southern half. The north is still calling me to come and explore.
