Roberto C. Herrera Jr. Deputy Secretary of Veterans Services

Roberto C. Herrera Jr. was appointed Deputy Secretary of Veterans Services by Governor Gavin Newsom on October 10, 2023. He has served in several key positions at CalVet since 2014 including the oversight, design, and strategy of CalVet’s mental health, housing, and supportive service programs, CalVet’s District Offices, and the accreditation of California’s County Veteran Service Offices.

 

Roberto’s prior experience also includes the development of the California Transition Assistance Program, Justice Involved Veteran Initiative, and the Disabled Veteran Business Enterprise Program.

 

Roberto was a Scientific Applications Specialist (9S100) in the U.S. Air Force from 2008 to 2012, ultimately attaining the rank of Senior Airman. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from the University of California, Davis and a Master of Public Health degree from the University of San Francisco.
