| What happens when a class project inspires a business idea? While working on an Entrepreneurial Ventures assignment at Ball State University, Lizzy Chew decided to tackle a problem that she notices on a regular basis as a hairstylist.
“I noticed so many hairstylists at my place of work were leaving the industry because they needed to take care of their children or because they felt stressed when clients brought their children in and it became a safety concern during appointments,” Lizzy shared.
This problem led to more than just staff shortages; it was affecting both stylists and clients. Even at its best, the salon experience wasn’t always as relaxing as it should be. Lizzy wanted to change that, so she designed a business concept that helped both sides of the salon chair. “While thinking through ideas for my project, I realized this was a problem I wanted to solve, which led me to create The Beauty Nook,” Lizzy explained. “This is an all-service hair salon that includes childcare services to make the experience easier and more enjoyable for both parents and stylists.” The Beauty Nook offers full-service hair care, including haircuts, color, and styling. What sets the salon apart is its built-in free childcare option. This addition can transform what is often a stressful appointment into a relaxing and positive experience. It’s a concept that makes going to the salon more accessible for families, especially those with young children. Through Ball State, Lizzy was introduced to the East Central Indiana Small Business Development Center (SBDC). She knew several students who had already worked with Business Advisor James Womack. She started as an East Central Indiana SBDC client, and the opportunity challenged her to think more deeply about her business. “After meeting with James, I learned more about how the SBDC supports entrepreneurs and provides resources to help them grow their ventures,” Lizzy said. “Working with the SBDC helped strengthen my business plan by providing resources and guidance to help make my idea more successful. Being able to bounce ideas back and forth with people who have experience and knowledge in business was extremely helpful.” Lizzy recommends working with the SBDC to anyone considering starting or growing a business. She speaks highly not only of the expertise but also of the team’s accessibility. “They are easy to talk to and flexible with different schedules. What may feel like a casual conversation can leave you feeling motivated, inspired, and ready to set goals and complete different parts of your business venture,” she expressed. “My experience working with the SBDC is something I never knew I needed, but it helped take my business mindset to the next level. It gave me more confidence in my ideas and helped me see my business from a stronger, more realistic perspective.” To learn more about The Beauty Nook or connect with Lizzy directly, reach out via email at Elizabeth.chew@bsu.edu
