The Ian McBride Humanitarian Award honors an individual or organization in Ontario that has made significant and positive contributions to the Anglican United Refugee Alliance (AURA)’s settlement and support of refugees. This award recognizes those who exemplify the humanitarian spirit of Ian McBride, the former Executive Director of AURA, whose tireless work shaped the foundation of private refugee sponsorship in Canada.
Background on AURA: AURA, a Canadian charitable organization, assists refugees in rebuilding their lives by providing sponsorship and settlement support. Founded in 1991, AURA partners with Anglican and United Church communities across Ontario to facilitate private refugee sponsorship. The organization is a Sponsorship Agreement Holder (SAH) with the Canadian government, enabling it to guide communities in welcoming refugees and fostering their successful integration into Canadian society.
Under the visionary leadership of Ian McBride, who served as AURA’s Executive Director for over 30 years, the organization became a beacon of hope for countless refugees and an advocate for community-driven resettlement. Ian’s dedication to education, advocacy, and compassionate action has inspired thousands of volunteers and transformed the lives of generations of refugees.
The Ian McBride Humanitarian Award was established to celebrate the legacy of Ian McBride and to honor those who carry forward his values of empathy, resilience, and commitment to social justice.
Eligibility and Criteria: This award is available to individuals or charitable organizations located in Ontario that have a connection to AURA. Nominees must present exceptional contributions to refugee settlement, embodying AURA’s vision of welcoming and inclusive communities.
Members of the Selection Committee and AURA Board members are not eligible for nomination.
Submission Guidelines: The application must be submitted via email to the AURA office by April 30, 2025, and include the following: i. Impact Statement (maximum 2 pages):
- How the nominee’s work has influenced their community or field.
- Highlighting accomplishments and alignment with the award’s purpose.
- Detailed descriptions of contributions or initiatives relevant to refugee sponsorship and settlement.
ii. Optional Supporting Materials: Photographs, media coverage, endorsements, or testimonials.
AURA will announce the winner at the AGM and may further publicize in other media.
