On January 9, 2025, the International Concrete Repair Institute (ICRI) Chicago Chapter, in collaboration with our friends at the Structural Engineers Association of Illinois (SEAOI), hosted a technical seminar which focused on nondestructive and destructive evaluation for concrete. The event was hosted by Wiss Janney Elstner Associates, Inc (WJE) at their facility in Northbrook and was attended by over 75 industry professionals, including several local students. The morning presentation session was kicked off by Colin Rueb (Raths, Raths & Johnson, Inc.) and Stephen Garrett (WJE) discussing corrosion evaluation. Amy Woods (Braun Intertec) followed with a presentation on petrographic examination and materials testing. Nate Rende (WJE) presented defect non-destructive evaluation (NDE) techniques followed by Kathleen Strnad (Klein & Hoffman, Inc.) and Mohammad ElBatanouny (WJE) who presented on vibration NDE . Ryan Fagan (Thornton Thomasetti) and David Cheyne (WJE) closed the morning session with an informative presentation on drones and imaging nondestructive evaluation. Following lunch, Dan Moser (Walker Consultants) wrapped up the technical presentations with an informative discussion of structural load testing. Attendees then participated in a hands-on session which included six stations: Petrographic Examination by Daniela Mauro (WJE) and Ron Sturm (Braun Intertec); Vibration NDE by Luke Traverso (WJE); Corrosion Evaluation by Nick Drews (Vector Corrosion Services), Stephen Garrett, and Colin Rueb; Drones and Imaging by Ryan Fagan and David Cheyne; Bond Testing by Craig Frier (Sika) and Joni Jones (Braun Intertec); and Defect NDE by Nate Rende, Dan Wetherington (WJE), and Alf Gardiner (Braun Intertec). |
