FABIO CUFFARI DIALLEY

DIANNE B. BERNHARD GOLD MEDAL AWARD IN PASTEL

As the recipient of the $1,000 Dianne B. Bernhard Gold Medal Award in Pastel, Fabio Cuffari Dialley, decided to do something deeply personal—a portrait of a very important person in his life. “The painting depicts my mother. It was the first painting in the series I started in 2020,” he said.

In defining the essence of the pastel, La Dama Paziente (“The Patient Lady”), he shared a description written by the curator of his first exhibition. “The composition follows a perfect triangle, at the top of which the woman’s lucid and inspired gaze, which is partially illuminated by a warm and enveloping light source coming from the left. The solemn figure seems to invite viewers to a deeper reflection, and to rediscover their own essence in meditation and silence. This woman, so deeply spiritual, human and earthly, is the embodied symbol of faith, of the patient acting daily in the name of a strength of spirit that only mothers have in their souls.”

Cuffari Dialley hails from Aosta, Valle d’Aosta, not far from the Dora Baltea River in Northern Italy. Since 2012 he has worked on various commissions of murals for municipalities, schools, prisons and other institutions. In 2014, he founded “Associazione Alfa” which, to this day, offers artistic and cultural initiatives, both in his region and at national level.
