Welcome to Our HeartMind Adventure!

Our HeartMind Adventure activities give you a way to understand more about the value of "Our 5Cs"—consciousness, compassion, confidence, courage, and community. This month, we're focusing on "compassion" or exercising a genuine caring for another’s suffering and the will to help minimize or reduce their pain. When we are compassionate, we in turn, receive strength through our sense of helping others, and being loving and caring.

Step One: Observe

As you listen to news— it could be politics, it could be information on COVID-19 relief funds or vaccines, it could be how communities of color are faring, or it could be related to equitable distribution of resources and technology to support online learning—what are you noticing? Are your finding that compassion is often missing from these conversations?

Step Two: Reflect

Look for examples of compassion in your life. It could be in your school, with your family, in your community, or in the world.


As you talk with others about local, national, and international needs and events, reflect on how compassion is revealed in these conversations.

Step Three: Deepen Your Understanding

Over the next month, find a few moments each day to put your hands over your heart and breathe. As you breathe, feel the warmth in your heart and reflect on your love for family, friends, and self. As you have time, jot down a few notes about what happens over the month as you focus on your heart and compassion.

Take a couple of breaths and consider compassion.


Try our exercise!

  1. Visualize a scene with students at your school, coworkers at work, or a family or community event. Picture the members of your group being excited, engaged, kind, and considerate. How does this picture make you feel?
  2. Now place your hands over your heart, take a couple of deep breaths, and picture the same scene.
  3. Consider what you pictured and how you felt. Did you notice any difference? (Mason et al., 2019, p.2)



When your hands were over your heart, you may have noticed a warmth in your heart, a sense of a more complete scene, or a feeling of being more fully present and connected to these people. These feelings reflect the spirit we hope to achieve called heart centeredness.
