Message from the Chair

Welcome to the latest edition of our Department of Emergency Medicine Newsletter.

As we begin 2024, I want to thank our faculty, clinicians and administrative staff whose dedication and tireless efforts made the past year an extraordinary one. In 2023 we celebrated a significant milestone: our fifth anniversary as an academic department within Weill Cornell Medicine. Our Department’s growth and expansion was featured in a recent article on WCM Newsroom which is available below.

Looking ahead to 2024, we will persist in our mission to deliver the highest quality care to our patients, provide advanced training and education to the next generation of emergency medicine clinicians and leaders, and conduct rigorous research to further the practice of emergency medicine. We will also continue to cultivate an inspiring and supportive environment which promotes academic endeavors, leadership development, clinical excellence, mentorship and diversity.

It is a gift to work with such a talented and exceptional group of people. Thank you for making our Department everything that it is and we look forward to a new year filled with growth, innovation, and outstanding patient care.

Weill Cornell Emergency Medicine Ranked in Top 15 Nationally in NIH Research Funding

We are excited to announce that the Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research has just ranked our department 14th nationally in National Institute of Health (NIH) research funding for 2023. Aside from the fact that this is our highest ranking to date, this is a notable milestone for our department because we were unranked just five years ago.

We have spent the last few years continuing to advance and influence emergency care through innovation and research and have made important strides in research since Weill Cornell elevated Emergency Medicine to a full academic department in 2018.

Thanks to the hard work of our research teams, we have also experienced a 362 percent increase in sponsored research— which includes a 225 percent increase in grants from the National Institutes of Health—and achieved a 230 percent surge in publications. Our new ranking reflects these efforts.

Congratulations to our faculty and staff whose dedication and vision have contributed to this achievement and to the success of our department.

Five Years After Establishment, Department of Emergency Medicine Experiences Transformative Growth

The Department of Emergency Medicine has made tremendous strides since 2018 when Weill Cornell Medicine elevated it to a full academic department; an achievement that underscores the department’s mission to provide exceptional patient care.

“The past five years have been a period of exceptional growth and achievement and were also marked by unprecedented challenges,” said Dr. Rahul Sharma, chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine. “COVID-19 changed the way we worked and delivered care; yet, true to our vision of leading emergency care with innovation, scholarship and compassion, our department adapted, evolved and became a national leader in virtual care, innovation, physician wellness, education and research embodying Weill Cornell Medicine’s credo of ‘Care. Discover. Teach.’”

In the past five years, the department added nearly 30 physicians and scientists to its ranks, experienced a 362 percent increase in sponsored research—including a 225 percent increase in grants from the National Institutes of Health—and achieved a 230 percent surge in publications. A pioneer in telemedicine long before the COVID-19 pandemic, the department’s use of the technology has improved health care access for New Yorkers—and offered a wider array of options for people seeking care in the emergency department—while also driving national dialogue about its potential to transform patient care. These and other achievements have established the Department of Emergency Medicine as a national model and set the stage for continued leadership in academic medicine.

In recognition of Dr. Sharma’s accomplishments, the Friedman Foundation, along with the law firm Weil, Gotchal and Manges, directed by Weill Cornell Medicine Board of Fellows member Barry Wolf, generously established and endowed the Barbara and Stephen Friedman Professorship of Emergency Medicine.

"This professorship will allow us to further our mission of providing outstanding clinical care, conducting innovative research and driving change through education,” said Dr. Sharma, who as of Nov. 1 will be the inaugural holder of the professorship. “I’m profoundly thankful to Barbara and Steve Friedman and the Friedman Family Foundation, as well as Barry and Weil, Gotchal and Manges for their support and confidence in our department, and I’m thrilled to see where the next five years will take us.”

6th Annual Virtual Healthcare in the Mainstream Symposium & Research Forum

The Center for Virtual Care at Weill Cornell Medicine recently hosted its sixth annual Virtual Healthcare in the Mainstream Symposium & Research Forum. This year’s theme was “Transforming Global Health Through Virtual Care.” The conference brought together healthcare professionals, technology experts and researchers from around the world to explore the profound impact of virtual care on the future global medicine.

Topics included how to elevate global patient care in the digital age, the use of medical extended reality in emergency medicine and the impact of virtual care on climate change. Attendees engaged in discussions on innovative technologies such as telemedicine, remote patient monitoring, and digital health platforms that have played a pivotal role in expanding access to healthcare services and improving patient outcomes on a global scale.

Throughout the conference, there was a strong focus on the transformative power of virtual care in addressing healthcare disparities and enhancing healthcare delivery in underserved regions. Participants shared success stories and best practices from various initiatives, highlighting how virtual care has been leveraged to bridge gaps in healthcare access, particularly in remote or resource-limited areas. The discussions also delved into the challenges and opportunities associated with the widespread adoption of virtual care, including issues related to privacy, regulatory frameworks, and the need for continued investment in technology infrastructure.

The WCM Emergency Medicine Interest Group partnered with the WCM student-led CODE BLOOM (Black and Latinx Overcoming Obstacles in Medicine) Mentorship program to provide simulation and skills training.

Department of Emergency Medicine & Center for Virtual Care Receive Two Grants from the Association of American Medical Colleges

The Department of Emergency Medicine and the Center for Virtual Care (CVC) have received two grants from the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). The grants were awarded for the Department and CVC’s efforts to advance and accelerate innovation and competency-based medical education in telehealth.

One award—part of the AAMC Competency-Based Education in Telehealth Challenge Grant Program—will fund a project focusing on the use of telehealth education to address patient safety and the appropriate use of telehealth in-patient encounters. The project team, led by Dr. Kristen Ng and Dr. Neel Naik, will work on developing a distributable, simulation-based curriculum and assessment tool to help physicians determine which patient encounters are most appropriate for virtual care.

The other award—AAMC Telehealth Equity Catalyst Award—recognizes institutions with programs that leverage telehealth and healthcare technology to improve healthcare equity and whose innovative contributions to healthcare delivery can serve as models for other institutions to address and mitigate barriers to telehealth. The award will fund projects, led by Dr. Maria Lame, that will help sustain and scale curricula and programs designed to address healthcare equity and barriers to telehealth in under-resourced communities.

Increases in Pediatric Mental Health Emergency Visits Persist Throughout Pandemic

Mental health crises among children and adolescents requiring emergency department care skyrocketed during the pandemic and have stayed elevated despite a return to normalcy, according to a study by Weill Cornell Medicine and NewYork-Presbyterian investigators.

The study, published in the journal Pediatrics on Oct. 20, compared rates of pediatric mental health visits in the emergency departments of five New York City medical centers from a pre-pandemic period through five pandemic waves. Each wave saw elevated rates of youth mental health-related visits compared to before the pandemic. They found, however, no relationship between pediatric mental health visits and COVID-19 prevalence or how strict mitigation measures were.

Youth mental health was already in a crisis, but the pandemic may have exacerbated or uncovered underlying issues. “The COVID-19 pandemic made the problems more pronounced,” noted first author Dr. Deborah Levine, an associate professor of clinical emergency medicine and associate professor of clinical pediatrics at Weill Cornell Medicine and a pediatric emergency medicine physician at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center.

Department of Emergency Medicine Announces Innovation Fellowship

The Department of Emergency Medicine, in partnership with the Cornell Tech Jacobs Technion-Cornell Institute, is proud to announce a new fellowship focused on innovation. The Innovation Fellowship in Emergency Medicine will teach the skills needed for emergency medicine physicians to become clinical leaders in the digital transformation of healthcare. Fellows will be trained in all aspects of the innovation pipeline including ideation, design, intellectual property, financing, and strategic planning, and change management.

“Healthcare is poised to change rapidly with a host of new innovative tools and processes” said Dr. Peter Greenwald, Vice Chair, Clinical Strategy and Innovation and Associate Professor of Clinical Emergency Medicine. “Our new fellowship will provide emergency medicine physicians with the training needed to be leaders in this space. As medicine enters the digital age it is essential that we have clinician leadership to navigate coming changes. This fellowship will allow emergency medicine physicians to steer progress in positive directions for both their patients and for their institutions. We are thrilled to be able to combine our partnership with Cornell Tech and our department’s record in training physician-leaders to make this possible."

Center for Virtual Care Expands Telemedicine Training for NewYork-Presbyterian Residents

In 2023, the Center for Virtual Care broadened its telemedicine training program to include all new residents within the NewYork-Presbyterian network, encompassing Weill Cornell Medicine and Columbia University Irving Medical Center. This comprehensive 4-hour module is designed to enhance communication skills and equip participants with the knowledge to effectively conduct diagnoses through video-based platforms.

The training method combines self-guided video materials with a simulated environment where trainees interact with actors, practicing various scenarios. These scenarios are then analyzed in a post-training lecture setting. The program emphasizes the identification and correction of common mistakes such as insufficient eye contact, and teaches techniques for conveying empathy through a video screen. Additionally, it includes vital discussions on conducting sensitive examinations and ensuring that patients are in a secure and private space when discussing their medical issues.
